F1 should be back in the USA

F1 wasn’t born in the USA but it’s about time it went back there. And here’s why.

F1 doesn't need ovals but it should be in the USA

F1 doesn't need ovals but it should be back in the USA

The United States is massive, massive in many ways. Massive in terms of land mass, massive in terms of global econimcs. Many people see the US as the most important place in the world, and it is undoubtably one of the most powerful. For all these reasons F1 should be there. Don’t worry this isn’t an American history lecture.

Us Brits, we like to pretend that we invented the world, and when our transatlantic cousins are involved, we won’t budge an inch. Leaving American shores for greener pastures in 2006, F1 deserted a nation of enthusiasts that espoused the series as the pinnacle of motorsport, is it surely not time that we rescued them from the clutches of ring-racing NASCAR and reintroduced the series to the land of the free?

Here’s a more relevant reason why F1 should be in the states – the tracks on offer. Ignoring the ill-fated Indinapolis circuit there’s Longbeach, Laguna Seca, Phoenix (street) to name a few.  Indianapolis was fun right? That Monza-esque banked corner and the long straights, not to mention Ralphy’s dislike for the place, it was all in the spirit of racing, but think what it would mean to see F1 engines tearing around Laguna Seca.

With USF1 or USGPE – whatever you want to call them (all rubbish names so far as the Badger is concerned) to be part of F1 in 2010 it’s only a matter of time before Bernie directs the F1 circus back across the pond to the land of the yanks. Looking at the current trends, Bernie is going for more dramatic spectacles with Singapore and Malaysia and with Rome and Paris on the agenda. He’s moving away from the ‘track in an old airfield’ type circuits and on to events that resemble F1 arenas with super modern facilities.  Dispite what Frank Williams thinks we believe there is space for a US event.  Fernando “I love chicken” Alonso has pleasure of two events in Spain – F1 doesn’t need to be in Spain twice a year, we’d much rather see F1 back in the US.

The US is more than capable of delivering Bernie’s wishes. Back in th 80s even Las Vegas held a Grand Prix – a less prestigious Monaco maybe but a stunner none the less.

Toyota F1 had a go at the Corkscrew a while back.

How good does this look, at the USA-West GP in the 80s (even with the less than enthusiastic commentary)

So there’s plenty to be said for heading back to the USA.  The famous ‘corkscrew’ corner at Laguna Seca race circuit is enough of reason alone.  Imagine F1 flying around this:

Steep, twisting and fast. Its called a corkscrew because it's exactly like a....corkscrew.

Steep, twisty and fast. It's called a corkscrew because it's exactly like a....corkscrew.

What do YOU think about F1 getting back in with the land of stars and stripes?
