
With Formula One and Moto GP crossing paths on our tele-boxes for at least the second time in as many months it might have been expected that the latter should win out in terms of pure entertainment value. Luckily F1 had the magic of the Ardenne Forest on its side and the show was nothing but classic racing at its absolute very best.

Some might say that Andy Soucek is a big fish in a small pond now that he’s crossed into Formula Two, but nothing could be further from the truth. This is an entirely different beast, and the only transferable benefit is experience. Having been buried within a team environment for much of the past years, the Spaniard should have been at a distinct disadvantage where set up is concerned, especially compared with the recent graduates from the FPA series.

“It’s really hard racing,” he emphasises, as over the course of half a season, the guys at the back have got twice as good, and there’s just no margin for error now. A factor, which might explain the sometimes irrational and largely schizophrenic results of the season, where despite a few clear front runners now emerging, consistency has been a huge downfall for the formula.

Come the close of qualifying two, it was sealed. Valencia was a hopeless track, desperately uninspiring and disappointing. Spa “so good they should run it twice” Francorchamps was back, and with what fanfare. Was it the negative camber, the adverse weather that brought these drivers to the edge of reason?
