Jarno Trulli’s wine – we quite fancy having some here in the Sett to help with writing our off-season pieces and we’re pretty sure that any F1 fan would find a bottle of truly good wine to be an excellent present.   The ex-Toyota driver has his own vineyard in Italy and produces his own wine, which is now for sale in the UK and most of the world.  Averys Wine Merchants of Bristol import the wine for the UK and you can order a bottle or a case online here.  It’s not radically overpriced at all with bottles being generally less than £10.  (taken from Badger’s guide to Father’s Day presents, more here)

A driving experience day at Silverstone is a sure winner for anyone who feels like buying that special someone a special present.  There are plenty of such offerings out there, but with Silverstone being the true home of the British Grand Prix, we can’t see anywhere else better to have a drive around.  They offer everything from fast supercars to single seaters and even skid control driving experiences – bloomin’ brilliant.  More information here: Silverstone Experiences

In one of the previous Christmas Shopping guides we mentioned the bonkers amount of cash you can blow on stuff in the Ferrari store with everything from socks to kids toys, brief cases and after shave being emblazoned with a prancing horse.  Well it seems the Italian lot aren’t the only culprits because the “F1″ brand do similar thing in their shop.  Our favourite item is their ‘gift set’ or, more precisely their ‘body spray, mug and keyring gift set’ – what a combination!  If you don’t like someone and they happen to like F1 (and you need to buy them a present) – look no further: See it here.

One of our more silly suggestions is that you visit Race Cars Direct where you could by an F1 fan their very own F1 car – there are quite a few old F1 cars, even a couple of 90s Ferrari cars.

The cost is high but if you’ve got the cash and the space, it would make for a dinner party ice-breaker.

Imagine that if you were on ‘Come dine with me’ – 1o points for a victory guaranteed.

It’s an obvious, but always a winner of an idea – books and DVDs.  There are hundreds of F1 books on the shelves of your high street book stores and the famous online one that sounds like a rain forest.  So many in fact, that choosing a book can be tricky if you don’t know your Buttons from your Hills.  To help out, Badger’s very own Riccardo Monza has reviewed four of his current favourite F1/motorsport books – you car read them here – Book Reviews – a sure fire winner of a present.

While we’re on the subject of media, this shopping list wouldn’t be a shopping list if we didn’t mention a popular CD called “F1 Sounds” – don’t worry, it’s not Jacques Villeneuve’s second album – it’s actually exactly what it says on the tin, i.e. a CD of F1 sounds – mainly car engines, cars going around corners, down straights, in the pits and so on.  If we had a gold star for Badger’s most f1 geek friendly present this would be it!  It’s also ideal for a joke present if you’re stuck and fancy a chuckle on crimbo day.  It’s tricky to track down, if you can find a stockist let us know in the comments.

And finally, to wrap Badger’s Christmas Shopping Series, we have these final items – the BrawnGP toaster and BrawnGP iron.  Sadly, these are (very impressive) CAD mock ups and not actually real.  Maybe if you ask Father Christmas, he may be able to help.  The mock ups are made by a chap called Chris LaBrooy (check his portfolio here) and well, we were so impressed here at the Sett that we had to share them with you all.

Top Trumps! The classic and damn addictive card game.  But here’s the twist rather than your normal car related Top Trumps, this set is all about chav cars, so instead of top speed and accelerating, we’re talking ‘garishness’ or how ‘pimped up’ the motors are.

Did you enjoy woodwork at school?  Are you looking for something that will keep a young F1 fan occupied while the grown ups have their post-dinner nap?  Then look no further that this actually pretty damn good wood craft kit which will leave the recipient smiling, happy with their very own F1 grand prix car.

Now for the simply just bonkers - Racing Grannies. We can’t even believe that these exist, that some factory in China is actually putting together models of old ladies using zimmer frames that can move under their own power.  It’s just insane, so insane that it’s actually good.

Bizzarre, yes but surely if a random stocking filler is what you’re after then you won’t have to look any further!  If you’re really sold on the idea of racing grannies then you’ll also probably like the idea of granny track racing.

Here’s a rather sexist present for the female F1 fan – a “Girls guide to Car Care” from the usually more respectable John Lewis store.

What the heck, motorsport can be seen as sexist with all the men doing the driving and women holding signs while wearing short skirts.  If you know of a female F1 fan, this could be an ideal stocking-filler.

Bernie enjoys Christmas

Christmas is always a tricky time of year, with seemingly endless amounts of presents to buy for friends and family and you’re always left wondering “What can I get for uncle Colin?”

You may not have an uncle called Colin, but you will have someone in your circle of family and friends who loves Formula 1.  In fact, if you’re reading this, you probably like F1 yourself.  Either way, F1 Badger is here to help you with your Christmas shopping – yep you guessed it, this is our new seasonal series – “Badger’s Guide to an F1 Christmas”

Over the next few weeks we’ll be bringing you a selection of excellent F1 and motorsport gift ideas, some superbly extravagant, some actually quite good ideas and some of the most downright hilarious offerings out there, so let’s kick things off:

First up is one of more humorous findings, perfect for any F1, and particularly Jacques Villeneuve fans – if you didn’t know already, the Canadian ex-World Champion seemingly found himself twiddling his thumbs after an illustrious racing career, so much so in fact that he turned his attention to music.  We’re not talking about going out and buying records or playing with an iPod, oh no, Jacques went one step further by writing and singing his own songs and putting them out as an album: Private Paradise by Jacques Villeneuve

On a slightly more serious note, how about some of the quite simply beautiful items on offer from motorsport’s most famous Italians, Ferrari?  Sure, there are some ludricously expensive products with prancing horses on them, but there are also a few divine delights.  If you know someone who likes wearing driving gloves, Ferrari have a smashing pair of luscious leather ones.  And if there’s a youngster in the family, there some really quite cute racing themed toys and clothing.  It’s best to go and have a browse at a Ferrari store – there’s one on Regent Street here in London, but if that’s not local, there’s also an online store here

And while we’re on the subject of clothing, if you do fancy buying your little one or your kid brother or sister some F1 related clothing, but couldn’t possibly buy them Ferrari stuff, then a much better option may be Marks and Spencer – they do a superb range, in association with Lewis Hamilton and the McLaren F1 Team.  There’s everything from tshirts, to caps and pyjamas.  Prices are more realistic than Ferrari and well, it’s a little less ostentatious than a fancy prancing horse…  You can view the range in any Marks and Spencer High Street shop or while your online, check out the range at the M&S website.

So clothing isn’t your bag?  No problem how about giving someone the opportunity to have their own mini grand prix, maybe even on their desk at work.  You can, thanks to the wonders of technology and these mini radio controlled cars – perfect for desktop racing.

There are some mini F1 radio controlled cars, the Badger saw them at Monza this year, but we can’t find an online stockist – if you know of one let us know in the comments, otherwise you can more than make do with a mini Mario and Yoshi… how odd!

Now then, how about the F1 fan Dad?  There are plenty of them and they are ruddy tricky to buy for, but please the sake of all F1 Dad’s out there, don’t go buying a VHS of “Murray’s Magic Moments” or other such cheaply made grand prix DVDs.  Sure, there are some good ones, but the majority really aren’t.  He would prefer socks.  However, there are alternatives to the stereotypical ’socks for dad’ ways of thinking…

There is, for instance the Lewis Hamilton keyring – totally useful, we’re sure you’ll agree.  Or to be more original – If your dad fancies recreating the famous podium celebrations in the front room then how about buying him the podium celebration music that’s played after that annoying chap shouts ‘champaaaaaaaagne’ and the drivers waste a good bottle of champers.  You can get the music on a CD from Amazon here – another present may be the champagne too… you can get that here (if the wallet’s tight then Cava would do)

Wine from Jarno Trulli

It’s a well known fact that dads love wine, no matter if they prefer red to white or vice versa, because the Toyota driver Jarno Trulli has his own vineyard in Italy and produces his own wine, which is now for sale in the UK and most of the world.  Averys Wine Merchants of Bristol import the wine for the UK and you can order a bottle or a case online here.  It’s not radically overpriced at all with bottles being generally less than £10.

DVDs Past and Present

Any F1 dad would love to watch previous seasons of modern grand prix, just as much as reminisce the good ol’ days with the likes of Graham Hill and Jim Clark.

Thanks to some archive digging there’s a large selection of such items on sale at Amazon and they’re pretty reasonable, being around a tenner each.  An ideal present for a non-grand prix weekend and something for the son/daughter to enjoy too.

Formula 1 Air freshener

Bernie Ecclestone would never be one to miss an opportunity to make a few dollars out of his F1 empire, so not surprisingly there’s a massive selection of F1 branded items on F1.com including some dodgy looking suede caps.  The Badger’s favourite item is the F1 air freshener which is aerodynamically designed to ensure the fragrance is dispersed as effectively as possible with minimal drag – all for only £2.99.

It’s well worth checking out if you’re dad isn’t too fussed which team he supports. Formula One Store

Williams F1 Gifts

Williams F1 may not be a current front running team, but they are one of the most successful in the history of the sport and consistently popular with the British fan with the team giving drivers such as Nigel Mansell and Damon Hill championship winning cars.

You can download their catalogue of merchandise here.  Badger’s favourite item is the rather smart mouse mat and coaster.  Sure, it may not sound like the most exciting thing in the world but it’s more unusual than a pair of socks and at only £5 it’s pretty bargain-tastic.  Check it out here.

Scalextric

All dads, whether they admit it or not will have a penchant for Scalextric racing and what’s more the Scalextric website have a Father’s Day special offer on their Top Gear set at £110 with free P&P.  There’s plenty of other sets, some under a £100 and then there’s some lovely retro model cars to race such as Ford Cortinas and a Ford Capri.

Again, this is and ideal ‘present’ because the dad can play with their son/daughter and create the perfect Father’s day photograph for the family album.  A worthy purchase.

A Close Shave

It’s a fact that dads need to shave and if you’re looking for a F1 themed present that is actually useful then look no further than the Williams F1 endorsed Philips electric shaver.  It’s on special right now at less than £50 with free delivery from Amazon.co.uk.  This is a pretty amazing deal and well worth the money.

Nico Rosberg has this to say about it: “My life is a race every day, and I need the best support team I can find – my pit crew at work and my Philips shaver at home. It ensures I am in pole position every morning.” (Hmm, how much did he get paid for that!?)

F1 Car Parts

Forgive us, these aren’t cheap, but we had to include them because it would make for a most unusual and useless present…unless you’re planning on building your own F1 car.

Toyota has a shop on their site selling off old parts, with everything from engine covers, to wheel rims, to front and rear wings.

They vary from a few hundred pounds, right up to a few grand for an engine cover.  Visit the Toyota parts store here.

Ferrari Sat Nav

Even if you or your father drives a Ford Focus, there’s nothing stopping you having some Ferrari technology on-board thanks to this pretty impressive Sat Nav system.  And what’s more, if you’re not lost it can be used as a MP3 player and photo frame using the memory card slot.

This is a pretty pricey present, retailing at over £340, but if you are rich, have more money than sense and need a Sat Nav then why not.  Full details here.  It’s available from the Ferrari online store or if you’re not too far from Regent Street in London you can pick it up from the store there.

If you do want a Ferrari themed gift, there’s some pencils (in a box) for £12 or you can pick up a real Ferrari F1 piston, displayed on a carbon fibre stand for under £500.  There’s a plethora of other Ferrari branded gifts at the store, including some more cost-effective gifts such as shot glasses for £21 or a notebook for a tenner.  Ferrari Store Online
